What do you look forward to the most during the holidays? Is it traveling to visit distant family or friends, sharing age-old traditions, enjoying big meals crowded around the dinner table or creating new memories? Personally, I love all that the holidays have to offer – even the festive chaos. With so much to enjoy and love about the holidays, it is important to stop and be grateful for all that we’ve been given.
The holidays are the perfect time of year to express gratitude to all of those who make our community a safe and pleasant place to live. We can express thanks to our first-responders, local volunteers and unsung heroes for all their much-needed and valued contributions. Below are some ways you can give thanks in Western Prince William County.
Cook a Meal
Show your gratitude for first responders by dropping off a home-cooked meal at your local police or fire station. The daily job requirements for a police officer, firefighter or paramedic are stressful and the hours are often long and irregular. A home-cooked meal might seem like a small way to say thanks, but it may be the perfect gift during a challenging day at work. Here are some suggested locations in western Prince William County.
First Responders:
- Prince William County Police Department
- Prince William County Sheriff’s Office
- Town of Haymarket Police Department
- Prince William County Fire and Rescue Stations
Volunteer or Donate
There are numerous charities in Prince William County that focus on giving back and providing services to those in need within our community. Volunteer your time or donate money to help support their mission. Research local charities and find a cause that “speaks” to you. Love books? Volunteer at the Library. Love animals? The Animal Shelter could use you. Curious about what other volunteer opportunities are available? Volunteer Prince William’s website provides a list of charitable organizations in our community, including the services each one offers and the types of volunteer help they need.
Bake Cookies
What about those other roles in our community that help to keep our families safe, our schools strong, our services reliable and our neighborhoods appealing? I’m talking about roles like bus drivers, school volunteers, crossing guards, trash collectors, postal workers, etc. These roles that seamlessly fit into our daily lives often go unacknowledged. I suggest taking the time to bake a couple batches of cookies to hand out to all the “unsung” heroes that make our community such a wonderful place to live.
Send a Thank You
In a day and age that digital communication is the norm, be the exception and send a handwritten thank you note. It doesn’t have to be written in calligraphy on fancy stationary. What’s important is that your note is personal and genuine. Explain what you are grateful for and why. Sometimes a simple note of recognition and thanks can mean the world.
Say Thank You
Kindness costs us nothing. Let’s remember that and give it freely as we interact with people in our daily lives. Just saying a simple “Thank You” can be a great way to show someone that you really appreciate what they are doing for you or the community.
May we all give thanks in Western Prince William County and share the bounties of gratitude. Our small gestures of appreciation and kindness will go a long way towards spreading cheer this holiday season.
